What Abraham Actually Discovered

A Mathematician's God and What It Means for the Rest of Us

I first read Stan Tenen's paper "The God of Abraham: A Mathematician's View" when Stan handed it to me in 1999, fresh from the printer. I'd been associated with his research for ten years by then. I understood what he was doing, I believed in its importance, and I genuinely wanted to follow his argument.

I got lost.

The paper opens with a beautiful and surprising idea — that Abraham's discovery of the One-God was not a religious experience in the conventional sense but an act of mathematical reasoning. That idea immediately made sense to me, in a way that nothing I'd learned in Hebrew school ever had. But by the second section the paper had moved into Fourier transforms, Penrose's entropy arguments, the geometry of torus knots, and a dozen other technical concepts that I couldn't follow without help. I put it down feeling that I had almost understood something very important and then lost the thread.

I read it again recently, twenty-five years later, and had exactly the same experience.

So what follows is my attempt to recover the thread — to tell the story that Stan was telling in a way that doesn't require a background in mathematics or physics, but doesn't require you to accept anything on faith either. The ideas are genuinely important. They deserve to be understood.

Part OneWhat Hebrew School Taught Us

Every Jewish child learns a version of the same story. Young Abraham is alone in his father's shop. His father Terach makes and sells idols — statues of the gods worshipped by the people of Ur of the Chaldees, the sophisticated city-state in ancient Babylonia where they live. While his father is away, Abraham takes a hammer and smashes all the idols except the largest one. He puts the hammer in the largest idol's hands.

When Terach returns and sees the destruction, Abraham tells him that the idols got into a fight, and the biggest one won. Terach says that's impossible — they're just stone and clay, they can't fight. And Abraham says: you're right. So why do you worship them?

It's a good story. It has a satisfying punch line. But it raises an obvious problem: if Terach was an educated, sophisticated man — and the tradition tells us he was — why was he literally selling stone statues as deities? We wouldn't expect a well-educated person today to be in the idol business. Why should we assume it of Abraham's father?

Stan's answer to that question opens everything up.

Part TwoWhat the Story Actually Means

Terach, Stan argued, was not selling stone statues to superstitious peasants. He was a worldly man, steeped in the arts, sciences, and spiritual philosophies of his time. And in his time and place — ancient Babylonia, crossroads of the ancient world — that meant familiarity with the best thinking of every major civilization then known.

The ancient Chinese had built a complete cosmology around the twenty-eight mansions of the lunar zodiac. The Greeks and Persians modeled the cycles of life through a pantheon of gods and their family relationships. The Druids of northern Europe found the self-propagating nature of life in the growth patterns of trees. The Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Sumerians — each had developed sophisticated systems for understanding the same fundamental mystery: how does the universe organize itself? How does life arise, sustain itself, and renew itself endlessly?

Each tradition was using different symbols. Different images. Different stories.

The "idols of metal and stone and wood" that Abraham rejected were not primitive effigies. They were the cultural, political, and scientific worldviews of the most sophisticated civilizations on earth. Abraham grew up surrounded by the best models of reality that the ancient world had produced.

And then — this is Stan's key insight — Abraham did what a mathematician does.

He looked at all of them and asked: what is the single underlying principle that every one of these different models is pointing at? Strip away the cultural costume. Strip away the particular symbols each tradition uses. Strip away the stories. What is actually being described?

What he found, when he stripped away everything that wasn't essential, was that every tradition — beneath its cultural embodiment — was modeling the same thing: the cyclic, self-propagating, self-renewing nature of all life. That process — that infinite self-renewing chain — was what every tradition was trying to express, each in its own language and embodiment. Abraham's name for the pure principle underlying all of it was Unity — Oneness — the One God.

This is why the Abrahamic faiths absolutely prohibit graven images of God. Not as an arbitrary religious rule — but because any physical image would inevitably be one culture's version, frozen in one historical moment, wearing one cultural costume. Abraham's definition was specifically designed to transcend all of that. It belonged to no one people and therefore could be available to everyone.

Abraham didn't find God by hearing a voice from the sky. He found God the way a mathematician finds a proof — by following the logic wherever it led, until nothing was left except what had to be there.

Note: The Sefer Yetzirah — the ancient Kabbalistic text on the formation of the Hebrew letters, considered one of the oldest and most significant texts in Jewish mysticism — is traditionally attributed to Abraham, with Rabbi Akiva credited in some traditions with reducing the oral teaching to written form. Stan Tenen demonstrates that the same geometric pattern he found in Genesis 1:1 is present in the opening verse of the Sefer Yetzirah as well. This is not coincidence or interpretation — it is the same mathematical pattern, present in both texts. That the tradition credits Abraham with originating the Sefer Yetzirah and Akiva with transmitting it, and that both texts encode the same geometry, suggests a single continuous mathematical understanding at the origin of the tradition.

Part ThreeThe Problem This Creates

If Abraham's discovery of God was an act of mathematical abstraction — the stripping away of every cultural embellishment to find the pure principle underneath — then a profound and urgent question immediately arises.

How do you preserve an abstraction?

Every other tradition had vessels for their understanding. The Egyptians built in stone. The Greeks encoded their knowledge in geometry and architecture. The Druids planted sacred groves. Each culture found something physical and durable to carry their deepest understanding forward through time.

But Abraham's definition of God had no image. No statue. No temple could contain it without distorting it. No story could fully represent it without reducing it to something smaller than it was. The whole point of Abraham's insight was that God could not be represented — because any representation would be just one culture's version, exactly the thing he had seen through.

So how do you hand down to your children — and their children's children — something that by definition cannot be represented?

This is the question that leads directly into the heart of Stan Tenen's research. Because his answer — arrived at through fifty-four years of mathematical analysis — is remarkable.

Abraham encoded the principle not in stone, not in a story, not in a ritual.

But in the human hand.

Part FourThe Pattern That Started Everything

In 1968, Stan Tenen was sitting in his apartment in Newton, Massachusetts, when he had an urge to look at a Chumash, a Hebrew Bible he had received at his Bar Mitzvah which lay dormant since he was 13.

He was a visual pattern recognizer, and when his eyes fell on the letters of the first verse of the Hebrew text of Genesis, something stopped him. Something was there but he couldn't identify it.

He asked around. He went to MIT. He went to Harvard. He asked rabbis and scholars. Nobody knew what he was talking about. Eventually someone suggested it might be connected to Kabbalah. He'd never studied Kabbalah. So he began educating himself, reading everything he could find — Hebrew material, Greek material, Eastern material — and spent the next decade trying to understand what, if anything, was hidden in the letter sequence of the opening of Genesis.

What he eventually found was this: the twenty-eight letters of the first verse of Genesis, when analyzed using a base-3 numerical system and arranged according to their mathematical relationships, produce a precise three-dimensional geometric form. Not approximately. Not metaphorically. Mathematically and demonstrably.

That form — which Stan called the First Hand model — fits the human hand the way a glove fits. Not because Stan designed it that way. Because the mathematics generated it that way.

And when you rotate this form through the natural positions that a human hand can take, it casts shadows.

Not random shadows. Not abstract shapes.

Letters. Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet. All twenty-seven of them. From one form. Generated by the mathematics of the first verse of Genesis. Visible as shadows when the light falls on it from the right direction. These are not reflections of modern Hebrew — they are shadows of 12th century Rashi-Nachmanides script.

In essence, the first verse of Genesis folds itself up into a form that casts shadows of the letters in which the text is written. It is a self-reflective phenomenon.

Part FiveThe Alphabet in the Hand

If the letters of the Hebrew alphabet are shadows cast by a geometric form that fits the human hand, then each letter is not primarily a graphic symbol for a sound. Each letter is a specific position of the hand. A gesture.

And here is the crucial point: gestures have natural meanings. Not meanings assigned by culture or convention, but meanings that arise directly from the physiology of the gesture itself.

The Hebrew letter Pe means mouth — and it can only be seen when the hand is in a puffing, outward gesture pointing toward the mouth. The letter Yod means hand — and it appears when the hand is in its most compact, most pointed position. The letter Resh means head, reaching, projecting — and it appears when the hand reaches forward and upward.

Every letter. Every gesture. Every meaning. Consistent and demonstrable.

And because every human hand in every culture makes the same gestures within the same range of motion — the range of motion is determined by anatomy, not by culture — the meanings are universal. Not Jewish meanings. Not ancient meanings. Human meanings. The alphabet, in this reading, is not a Jewish artifact. It is a human artifact, built into the biology of the hand, encoding directions of conscious focus that are prior to and independent of any particular language, culture, or religion.

This, Stan argued, is how Abraham preserved his abstraction. Not in a statue — which would be one culture's image of God. Not in a story — which would be one culture's narrative about God. In the geometry of the human hand. Which belongs to everyone who has ever had hands.

Part SixThe Brightest Possible Light

Let me try to explain the physics argument in plain language, because it is more intuitive than it first appears.

The physicist Roger Penrose made an observation that seems unremarkable until you think about it carefully. He pointed out that the earth does not actually gain net energy from the sun. We receive energy from the sun and we send the same amount back out into space. What the sun gives us is not energy — it is organized energy. Highly structured, low-entropy light, coming from one concentrated bright point in an otherwise cold, dark sky.

Life on earth is sustained not by the sun's energy but by the contrast between the bright sun and the dark sky. Without that contrast, without that difference, there is no information. Without information there is no self-organization. Without self-organization there is no life. It is the brightness against the darkness — the distinction, the difference — that makes everything possible.

Stan took this one step further. Penrose explains physical life — how plants grow, how organisms sustain themselves. But what about human consciousness? What about the fact that we are not only alive, but aware that we are alive — aware of our own awareness?

If physical life requires the contrast of a finite sun against a dark sky, human self-awareness requires an even higher contrast. Following Penrose's logic all the way to its limit: what if the source of illumination were not a finite star, but infinitely bright? Infinitely compact? Infinitely far away? Against a sky of infinite darkness?

That infinite contrast — the most exquisitely singular possible source against the most complete possible darkness — is Abraham's mathematical definition of God. Not a person. Not a personality. The ultimate attractor of conscious attention. The infinite light that draws awareness toward it the way a flame draws a moth, except that this flame is infinitely bright and the darkness around it is infinitely dark, and the pull toward it is the pull of consciousness toward its own deepest source.

Two names of God appear in the Hebrew Torah. HaShem — the Name — represents the infinitely singular, contracted, point-like aspect. Elokim — God — represents the infinitely expansive, whole, all-encompassing aspect. Stan identified these as two aspects of the same mathematical relationship: the infinitely sharp pulse and the infinite spectrum it generates, related to each other the way a musical note and its harmonics are related. Each defines the other. Neither can exist without the other. Together they are Unity — the flame wedded to the coal, as the Kabbalistic tradition puts it. The light in the Meeting Tent.

Part SevenTwo Mathematicians, One Discovery

Here is what I find most striking about all of this.

Abraham, working by pure philosophical reasoning in the ancient world, arrived at a definition of God as the most singular, most unified, most abstract principle possible — a mathematical definition of the highest possible contrast, the ultimate attractor of conscious attention.

Stan Tenen, working by pure mathematical analysis of the letter sequence of Genesis in a Massachusetts apartment in 1968, independently recovered a geometric form that encodes exactly this principle — and found that it generates the letters of the Hebrew alphabet as positions of the human hand, connecting Abraham's abstract definition to the most concrete, universal, embodied thing imaginable: the human gesture.

Neither of them started from faith. Neither started from tradition. Both started from observation, from pattern, from the refusal to accept the surface of things as the whole story.

And they arrived at the same place.

Abraham didn't know Stan's name. Stan didn't set out to find Abraham. But they were working on the same problem — how do you define, preserve, and transmit the most fundamental principle of reality in a form that is universal, self-evident, and impossible to corrupt — and they arrived at the same answer.

The geometry of the human hand.

Part EightWhy It Matters Now

The most fundamental thing about human consciousness is not cultural. It is not linguistic in the conventional sense. It is embodied. It lives in the hand. The geometry of self-reference — the form that falls through itself, the flame that generates its own shadow, the alphabet that arises from the structure of the hand that forms it — is built into every human body that has ever existed, in every culture, in every age.

No algorithm can form a gesture. No server can feel the weight of its own hand. No artificial intelligence, however sophisticated, can have the experience of moving through the positions of the Hebrew alphabet and feeling, in its own body, the meaning of what it is expressing.

Abraham found the principle by stripping away everything that was culturally specific until only the universal remained. Stan found the same principle by following the mathematics of the oldest text in continuous human use until it led him to the geometry of the human hand.

Perhaps the most important thing either of them discovered is also the simplest: the universal language of consciousness was never lost. It was always there, in our hands, waiting to be recognized.
